If all else fails, I guess it is your furniture that suffers.

Spencer used to train her claws on the wooden bed frame from IKEA. There are hundreds of scratch marks on it right now. She also scratched one side of the IKEA shelving unit made from wood, until it was no longer safe to stand. Of course it took her a few years to do that. And at least she was consistent with her locations.
