Today is 端午节, the 5th day and 5th month of the chinese calendar. The dumplings, or 棕子, and dragonboat races, are common enough. Our ancestors also marked the ocassion with wearing pommades, drinking medicinal wines and bathing with herbs to cool down the body and prevent the posionous insects.

In Chinese folklores, Madam White Snake 白素贞 drank the wine 雄黄酒, turned into her original form the giant white snake, and scared her useless husband to death, literally.

I agree. Call me china aunty if you like, but Hokkien bacang with pork belly salted egg yolk and chestnut is the best.

This story sounds furry interesting! Good thing my human pet doesn't have that wine that Madam White Snake had, or I could be in some trouble!

I hear they are now making bacang the healthy way. I saw it on Tv - with eel and legumes etc. I was told that bacang with pork belly is the bst but I wouldn't know for myself lah. I was thinking maybe I should try the chicken ones or something but was told by my friends to forget it. Its either pork belly or none at all :)
