I went out, and saw a lump of gray hairball on the steps. And a dead cockroach in the shower. Then I heard the sound of a cat jumping into the house through the shutters. I switched on the light, expecting to see Hat, but I couldn't see anyone.

Spencer heard it too. She sat up listening for a long while, then she went back to bed.
